Karun Agro-Industry Company was established on December 5, 1973, under Diemeh Private Joint Stock Company. Later, the company’s name was changed to Karun Sugarcane Agro-Industry Private Joint Stock Company and then to Karun Agro-Industry Company (Private Joint Stock). This company is registered under number 279 at the Shushter County Companies Registration Office. On September 24, 1974, the company received its establishment permit from the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources. Subsequently, the contract with the factory equipment manufacturers was signed in April 1975. The first factory operation began on March 11, 1978.
Over different periods, Karun Agro-Industry Company has gone through challenges and changes, such as the Gotvand Dam breakage, the impacts of the imposed war, economic structural transformations, and the implementation of the holding plan. With the management of new directors in 2014, the company started a new path by consolidating activities and reviving the greater Karun. Setting new records of sugarcane transport and reception in 2016 also indicates the development and growth of this supreme company.
Karun Agro-Industry Inc, as the largest sugarcane agro-industry unit in Iran, has significant economic justification. This company can supply about 25 percent of the country’s sugar needs. In addition, with about 2,500 direct personnel and about 7,000 people through several contracting companies that cooperate with the company in various operations, it provides livelihood for about 40,000 people directly and indirectly. This has a major economic and social impact on the northern Khuzestan region. Karun Agro-Industry Company also has extensive relationships with input suppliers, whose production and economic survival also depend on the Karun Company. In other words, this company plays an important role in the economic and social development of northern Khuzestan, the whole province, and even the country. Successful implementation of the Haft Tappeh sugarcane project and construction of new dams and irrigation networks, as well as utilization of water and soil resources, considering the growing need of the country for sugar due to population growth and per capita consumption, has contributed to the development of sugarcane cultivation in other parts of Khuzestan.
In 1972, the Khuzestan Water and Power Organization was tasked with conducting necessary studies for the implementation of a project to establish a new 110,000-ton/year sugar factory and an agricultural project for the annual production of 2.1 million tons of sugarcane. It was decided that one unit would be implemented through the private sector and the other by the government. This decision contributed to the development of sugarcane production throughout Khuzestan and ultimately led to the establishment of Karun Agro-Industry Company (Private Joint Stock). With the implementation of the Haft Tappeh sugarcane project, the development of new dams and irrigation networks, and the creation of facilities for the use of water and soil resources, Karun Agro-Industry Inc has also undertaken the development of sugarcane cultivation in other parts of Khuzestan. These developments, given the growing need for sugar in the country, have significant economic justification and contribute to the economic and social development of the region and the country.
